My Favorite Guitar Backing Tracks

Tracks I use for daily improvisation practice.

My Favorite Guitar Backing Tracks

Backing tracks help creativity by removing the burden of rhythm. Instead of fighting to stay in time, you can focus on phrasing, tone, and musical storytelling. Here are the tracks that live in my practice rotation.

'The best practice isn't always challenging—sometimes it's just playing over something that makes you feel like a musician.'
  • Why Backing Tracks Work*
  • My Go-To Tracks*
  • Blues Grooves* (The foundation)
  • 12-bar blues in E at 80 BPM - Perfect for warm-ups and developing taste. SlowBlues.com has excellent versions.
  • 12-bar blues in Am (minor pentatonic playground) - Where I explore bending and vibrato.
  • Modal Jams* (The experimental zone)
  • Dorian mode in D - Great for exploring that John Mayer-style funk tone.
  • Phrygian mode in E - For those Spanish/flamenco textures.
  • Mixolydian in G - Dominant 7th sound without being straight blues.
  • Rock Grooves* (The conditioning)
  • Hendrix-style rhythm guitar in Am at 120 BPM - Builds right-hand endurance.
  • Van Halen-inspired backing in E - For practicing explosive riffs and picking accuracy.
  • Jazz Standards* (The refinement)
  • Autumn Leaves progression - Teaches you to play with the harmony, not just over it.
  • Soft as a song, fast as thought progression - Demands you listen and respond musically.
  • Where I Source Them*
  • YouTube: Search "[key] backing track [tempo] [style]". Quality varies wildly, but free.
  • JoinMyBand: Customizable tempos and keys. Worth the subscription for serious players.
  • BT.Studio: AI-generated backing tracks that adapt to your playing (experimental, but addictive).
  • Spotify: Audionamix has phenomenal jazz and blues progressions.
  • The Practice Structure*
  • Pro Tip*
